On a Mother's Day of 2005
My neighbors and I
Spend the day like every other
in the last
8 years...

After All have done their
"Mother's Day GIG"
(Mine is just a phone call to Florida
where she calls me by someone else's name
and says the EXACT things she said last week)
We all meet back in the communal YARD
and Bar-B-Que

Today we cook Filets
as the Guys play croquet with the KIDS
around "the pond"...
Us gals watch the ducks
catch some rays in swimsuits...i'ts 82 in the sun...
we smoke
gab
and consume Tom Collins

The kids are quite a group
ranging from my own
"17" skateboarding, earring, nice kid, 3.6 GPA
"14" wonderful, caring, upcoming comedian
to the others...
depressed, suicidal, tutored teen...
chunky, tight clothing teen...
icky fighting brat pre-teens...
and alternatative, new wave, high top tennis shoe chick teen...

We then break out the Coronas and Case o' Wine
Change into jeans and sweatshirts
Start up the fire pit

EAT

I sit and watch my friends work the table leaving me stranded, and wondering how my life became so absurd as "Disappointed, Dysfunctional Parent" flashes as a neon sign a crossed my forehead.

I experience an instant desire for Prozac and make up an excuse to dash into the house. I check my email...gather a laugh or two, and head back out, to call it a night.

And this event in my life...is called Mother's Day

Whoever made up that stupid "Seize the Day" expression was never a Mom-There is no "Seizing" no Control
